Axelrod Says ?Pure Politics? May Undermine Economic Stimulus

President Barack Obama’s job stimulus plan and proposals to curb the national debt are endangered by politics, said David Axelrod, campaign strategist for President Barack Obama.
The failure to reach bipartisan consensus is due to “pure politics,” Axelrod said in an interview that aired yesterday on CNN’s “State of the Union.” Republican strategists such as Karl Rove countered on “Fox News Sunday” that Obama’s policies are falling short and jeopardizing his 2012 re-election.
“The only thing that keeps us from acting on many of these things is pure politics,” Axelrod said. “The fact that we can’t agree to extend a

NHL Playoff Notes: Caps Find Killer Instinct

capsgame5.jpg

his is what I wrote last year after the then run-and-gun Washington Capitals became the first No. 1 seed in NHL history to blow a 3-1 series lead and lose to a No. 8 seed, the Montreal Canadiens, in the first round:
"What do I hope the high-flying Caps learn from this Game 7 loss, and last year's Game 7 loss to Pittsburgh, and the year before when they lost in Game 7 to the Flyers?
DEFENSE WINS STANLEY CUPS."
Lesson learned. On Saturday afternoon the road to redemption took a big step in the right direction as the Caps

NFL Draft: Minnesota Vikings Team Draft Retrospective

107814616_crop_650x440.jpg?1303520122

This article is part of a series that looks at each NFL team’s recent draft history, with the hope of extracting information about the way they think and the players they value. The analysis is limited to the past five drafts in the interest of relevance, and the first three rounds because that’s where most impact players are taken.
This entry will focus on the Minnesota Vikings.
DRAFT HISTORY
In the past five years, the Vikings have taken the following players in the early rounds. Their positions and the rounds in which they were drafted are listed next to their

Central Hockey League: Jacks hope to avoid the long road to Allen

ljzhwc-ljzhvz041911jackalopesvsallen05.jpg

The Odessa Jackalopes’ practice Wednesday morning was optional.
Showing up at 7:05 p.m. tonight against the Allen Americans is not.
The Jackalopes lead the Americans, 2-1, in the best-of-5 Berry Conference semifinal series and will host Game 4 this evening at the Ector County Coliseum.
A victory, and Odessa moves on to the conference finals for the third consecutive year, awaiting the winner of the series between Tulsa and Bossier-Shreveport.
Find a way to lose and the Jackalopes are back on the bus to Allen for Game 5 at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
And though they won both games in Allen

COLUMN: Thunder could win NBA Finals

All-NBA-Games-Presents-Picks-and-Predictions-for-Christmas-Magic-vs.-Celtics.jpg

The Oklahoma City Thunder are right in the thick of the NBA playoffs just three years after moving from Seattle.
The concept of the Thunder being a playoff team is pretty remarkable in and of itself, but the thought that this team has a legitimate shot to win an NBA championship is just short of crazy talk.
Or is it?
The last few years as the Seattle SuperSonics saw a franchise in turmoil. Starting in 2005-06, the SuperSonics had three consecutive losing seasons that got progressively worse, ending in a 20-62 debacle in 2007-08.
The season of relocation wasn’t much

If the N.B.A. Is Wise, the Thrills Will Remain Nonstop

YJPARATON-articleInline.jpg

David Stern’s first order of N.B.A. business Monday morning should have been a memo to all owners agitating for apocalyptic labor confrontation this summer at the potential expense of the 2011-12 season.
“From the desk of your humble Commissioner: maybe we should rethink this draconian position.”
Stern might have wanted to link an assortment of clips from the best opening weekend of N.B.A. playoff basketball since the invention of the shot clock. Tense and riveting stuff, including Game 1 upsets of the defending champion Lakers and the Western Conference’s top-seeded Spurs, down-to-the-wire finishes everywhere and breathtaking performances from the old

Fan?s view: White Sox fans get double dose of good news on the pitching front

Chicago White Sox fans, we've got good news on the pitching front.
Sure, we've got a lot to be thankful for in that area already: a strong potential rotation, good backups on the mount in the unfortunate event one of the starters gets hurt, good middle relief and good potential for a solid closer, even if manager Ozzie Guillen does go for the dreaded (in my opinion) "closer by committee" plan.
But when it comes to pitching, you can always use more good news and the Sox gave it to us in the past few days with word that starter
